Anastrozole (also known as Arimidex) is a member of the class of compounds known as aromatase inhibitors. Aromatase is simply an enzyme that synthesizes estrogen. Aromatase inhibitors block the synthesis of estrogen. This compound binds reversibly to the aromatase enzyme through competitive inhibition, inhibits the conversion of androgens to estrogens in peripheral tissues (extra-gonadal).
